The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is the premier music school in Australia and in the southern hemisphere. This collection of new and evocative works celebrates the 2015 centenary of the Conservatorium. The SCM Wind Symphony has quickly established itself as a leader in the wind band movement. They are committed to presenting passionate and artistic concerts to their audiences, and to commissioning and recording music by talented composers from Australia and abroad. They enjoy collaborating with dance, theater, visual artists, and other contemporary media. Graduates of the ensemble have gone on to successful performing and teaching careers around the world.Celebrare aptly captures the mood of this collection of mostly Australian repertoire. The works by Lane and Hindson were composed especially for the ensemble, and Andre Previns first wind band work, co commissioned by the SCM Wind Symphony and other leading conservatories, is a focal point of the album. International conductor John Lynch is an Australian resident and a United States citizen. He guides Australias first comprehensive wind band program including the masters and doctoral degrees in wind conducting.

RUST BELT by Christopher Marshall premiered by

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY BAND

RUST BELT by Christopher Marshall for two solo trumpets and band was premiered by the United States Air Force Academy Band in February with a UK premiere given at the Royal Northern College of Music on March 23^rd, conducted by Mark Heron.

The US Air Force Academy Band announces that the band commissioned two new works to mark the 70-year Air Force milestone. One of those is “Rust Belt” by Orlando-based composer Christopher Marshall. Capt. Shanti Simon is the band’s associate conductor and flight commander. She says “Rust Belt” has a “blue-collar” energy. “Instead of playing… really light like you might play in a Mozart piece. We’re having [the band] play heavier to represent that machine-like, cogging along feel,” says Simon. “You hear this in the way [Marshall] writes the rhythms — there’s some very interesting interplay in between the trumpets and the steel drums, and percussion is really important.”

In this time of international tension and uncertainty it is good to reflect on a fifteenth century “war” chant which for six hundred years has inspired composers.
