SELECTING REPERTOIRE FOR NEXT SEASON

In a few days, many people will travel to Chicago to meet old friends and colleagues, and to search out new repertoire for consideration for next season. Browse this home page for ideas and save a lot of money.

I'd much rather hear you make a mess of typical modern music than to hear you tootle-ing forever at a lot of baby's stuff.'

Percy Grainger wrote this in 1943, seventy five years ago. How far have we moved the wind band and wind ensemble since then?

REPERTOIRE FOR AMATEUR BANDS

I recently conducted a repertoire playthrough with the Cambridge Wind Band, introducing them to the following works by three of my favorite composers, whose music does not, to my mind, pander to the milksops of sissified mother’s darlings.

Kenneth Hesketh                 Masque (Faber)

Adam Gorb                  Bohemian Revelry (Maecenas)

Guy Woolfenden          Celebration (Ariel)

Luis Serrano Alarcon   A British Paso Doble  (Alarcon)

Two great conferences in 2019, CBDNA in Arizona, February 20-23, and WASBE in Bunol, Spain, July 10–13.

GRAINGER ON TACKLING DIFFICULT MUSIC - 1943

I hate forcing my will on the fold. But still more to I hate shielding-the-wind from all these milksops of sissified mother's darlings who sit there yawning in the band, thinking they've played everything & know everything. If they want me to do anything with them I'll jolly well see to it that they get something to chew on & taste some of the rocks on the rocky road of now-tiney tone-art. Not that that the young folks do want me to do anything with them, much. When I draw near the wind-band or the string-wind-band I always think I hear soundless groans from the young folk & from their loving guides. Everyone (outcounting me) wants the young folks... to have so much joy in their tone-art... As I said to them at the last rehearsal of Lincolnshire Posy, anent the changing barrings:

'Don't mind if you play a few wrong notes; don't mind if you get the rhythms wrong. Please don't think I will suffer if you do. My job is to show you what modern music is like. These irregular barrings were started over 40 years ago, so its about time you begin to get used to them. I'd much rather hear you make a mess of typical modern music than to hear you tootle-ing forever at a lot of baby's stuff.'
