Greetings from total isolation in a beautiful Autumn, or Fall. I hope that 2021 sees Covid-19 being controlled and restrictions on life being eased. Until then, we have the chance to experiment with repertoire, and maybe discover new works to add to our library and concerts. I have never been keen on arrangements; I remember Fred Fennel suggesting that with so much original music to play, we really did not have time to play it all and to programme transcriptions.
However, I recently came across this letter from Richard Strauss, and who am I to contradict the master, so I am writing about a wealth of music for smaller ensembles, including new arrangements of music by Strauss himself, Brahms and Fauré.

Haydn’s Notturni were composed in 1788-90 to fulfil a commission from King Ferdinand IV of Naples for music featuring his favourite instrument, the lira organizzata. The Neapolitan variety, a popular equivalent of the hurdy-gurdy, incorporated small organ pipes activated by a keyboard. Haydn liked his Notturni well enough to rescore several of them for the famous Salomon concerts in London in 1791-92, replacing the lira parts with flute and oboe.
These Notturni are the work of a great composer at the height of his powers, and fully justify Haydn’s faith in them. Derek Smith’s sensitive and inventive reworking of this material for modern instruments is a welcome addition to the wind decet repertoire.

He was referring to the transcription of the Suite of Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss, arranged by Nigel Shore, oboist and conductor.

I’ve just finished a 45-minute Harmoniemusik for 15 winds based on Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. It is going to published by Schott, and the parts will be available for hire in Germany from Schott, and in the rest of the world from Boosey & Hawkes.
